Well I've begun work on the new magic system. I'm going to post my notes on it here so that we can get some opinions going.
However, the jokers that calmed to have "fixed" my laptop have done a botch job so I'll again be doing without it for a while. That's not for two days though so in the meantime...

NEW MAGIC
The new system is a scaled down version of the magic system from D&D Epic.
CURENT THINGS WHICH NEED TO BE FIGURED OUT: -
How to assign how often they can cast and how strong.
I've had the idea of a system whereby the spellcraft DC of the spells can be used to approximate an equivalent spell level (with rounding, of course). This means that we can take the spells from the player's handbook and convert them.)
Before epic level casting, no spellcraft check is used to cast and is only used to prepare original spells. (This system will give players freedom to invent their own spells (with guides) and will enable us to come up with other similar stuff, such as supernatural abilities. This system in general will be used to design such things as: -
Limit Breaks for the FF7 build,
The nature and abilities of Nobodies for the KH Build,
Vampire Traits for the LOK Build,
..as well as other things.
Pre-prepared spells needn't have a spellcraft check done to learn them. Because they've been researched already they can simply be copied in to the spellbook (or whatever) as per the 3.5 system.
I was also thinking that maybe a daily spellcraft check could dictate how any spells a caster can prepare or cast for that day (which would save us doing a table for each class we think of. A modifier would be all that we need and would be much simpler in the long run.
Also, for the purposes of developing and casting spells, I propose that the chief-spellcasting stat remains and they be used for these checks (with intelligence still being the stat needed for ordinary spellcraft checks).
This would also mean that there would no longer be two separate systems for magic and epic magic. They'd be one system.
I'm also thinking that maybe Epic spells will still be considered 10th level for the purpose of Concentration checks, spell resistance, and
other determinations. The assumed spell level now being the result of a simple calculation, an opposed to an assigned number.
So the whole thing will be based on spell-seeds. The only really tricky bit will be scaling down the seeds to fit lower level play. working out the conversion from levels to Spellcraft DCs will be tricky at first but I'm confident that it can be done.
I'm thinking that maybe a few more seeds will be needed, though we can easily make them as we go.
I'm wondering if Psionics should be worked out in the same way. I'm not too savvy on Psionics so I'm afraid I'm going to have to rely on the psyker experts among you for adice on that. (Seeing as PC World will have my laptop, I wont have time to fully read up on it).
That's all I've got for the moment. Thoughts?
